X, previously known as Twitter and now under the ownership of Elon Musk, is reportedly working on a new feature that may grant users the ability to disable links in the replies to their posts. This development, surfaced by an app researcher on social media, aims to reduce the presence of spam links in the replies. Additionally, X has been reported to be testing a ‘dislike’ button for its iOS app, enabling users to downvote replies.
The unearthing of this feature was credited to Nima Owji, an independent app researcher, who shared his findings on the platform. He mentioned that users might be able to disable links in post replies with a simple check mark, according to a screenshot he provided, which suggests its placement under the banner indicating only accounts you mention can reply.
Following this reveal, Christopher Stanley, a Security Researcher at X, confirmed its legitimacy, acknowledging that his team was responsible for developing the feature. This is among several features X is exploring to fulfill Elon Musk's goal of transforming the platform into an all-encompassing app, reminiscent of China's WeChat, encompassing functionalities from messaging to payments. The rebranding from Twitter to X last year also saw the replacement of the iconic ‘Larry the Bird’ logo with a minimalistic ‘X’.
Another feature reported to be in development on X is an in-app currency, which aims to allow content creators to earn rewards, expanding upon the current tipping capabilities. Despite these intentions, the currency feature has not yet been launched.
Further, last year X introduced a major change by eliminating the Likes tab from user profiles, initially available only to X Premium subscribers. Earlier this year, Haofei, an engineer at X, announced that the Likes tab would soon be hidden for all users. This change was intended to prevent users from feeling discouraged when expressing their approval of specific content. Under this new system, only the post's author would be aware of who liked their content.
